Deadlock Gameplay Tips
From beginner basics to advanced techniques, these tips will help you improve your Deadlock gameplay and climb the ranked ladder.
Beginner Tips
Learn One Hero First
Master Before Diversify
Don't try to learn all heroes at once. Pick one hero that fits your playstyle and master their abilities, combos, and item builds. Once comfortable, expand your hero pool.
Focus on Last-Hitting
Economy is Everything
Last-hitting minions earns significantly more Soul than letting them die naturally. Practice your timing to secure last hits consistently. This is the foundation of your economy.
Buy Items Early
Don't Hoard Soul
Buy items as soon as you can afford them. Having an item advantage early can snowball into lane dominance. Don't wait for perfect items—partial builds are better than no items.
Intermediate Tips
Map Awareness
Watch the Minimap
Glance at the minimap every 3-5 seconds. Knowing where enemies are prevents ganks and creates opportunities. If enemies disappear from the map, play defensively.
Objective Priority
Towers Over Kills
Destroying towers gives your entire team bonus Soul and opens up the map. Don't chase kills into enemy territory when you could be taking objectives.
Ward Placement
Vision Wins Games
Place wards at jungle entrances, teleporter exits, and objective areas. Good vision prevents ambushes and enables coordinated plays. Replace wards before they expire.
Advanced Tips
Ability Combos
Chain Your CC
Coordinate crowd control with teammates. If one player stuns an enemy, follow up immediately rather than using your own CC simultaneously. Chain CC maximizes disable duration.
Economy Manipulation
Deny Enemy Farm
When ahead, invade enemy jungle and deny their minion waves. Starving the enemy team of Soul is just as effective as getting kills. Control the map to control the economy.
Team Fight Positioning
Role-Based Positioning
Tanks should be frontline, absorbing damage and creating space. Damage dealers stay behind tanks, outputting from safe range. Supports position to heal and buff while avoiding enemy focus. Assassins flank to eliminate key targets.
Common Mistakes
Gameplay Errors to Avoid
- Chasing kills over objectives: A kill is worth 200 Soul. A tower is worth 500 Soul to your entire team. Always prioritize objectives.
- Fighting while behind: If you're down 2 items, don't force fights. Farm safely and wait for your team to catch up.
- Not backing to buy: Dying with 2000 unspent Soul is worse than missing one wave. Back and buy when you hit item breakpoints.
- Overcommitting to dives: Diving under enemy towers for one kill and dying trades 1-for-1 and gives them tower protection.
- Not communicating: Deadlock is a team game. Ping objectives, enemy positions, and your intentions. Silent players lose more games.
Pro Tips
Advanced Techniques
- Fake rotations: Walk toward one lane on the minimap, then teleport to another. Enemies will rotate to the wrong lane.
- Soul banking: Save 500 Soul before objectives. This lets you buy a component immediately after the fight, snowballing your lead.
- Ability baiting: Pretend to engage, then retreat when enemies use key cooldowns. Re-engage 10 seconds later when their abilities are down.
- Minion wave manipulation: Clear the first two minions of a wave, then let the rest push naturally. This creates pressure while you roam.
- Cooldown tracking: Mentally track enemy ultimate cooldowns. If Paradox used Time Rift 80 seconds ago, he doesn't have it for the next fight.
